If you want to get a head, get into mining. By: Rhona O'Connell
*Barbara Dischinger was asked to write an article by the Spanish Institute of Geology a while back and it was published in their magazine "Tierra y Tecnologia". (It is in Spanish). The topic is my view of the mining industry as a woman and as a person covering the industry without a mining related degree.
If you want to read it go to pages 89-93, (Dec 2006).
*Lynda Bloom and Jane Werniuk wrote a paper in 1993 which unfortunately wasn't published. They would like to use this medium to distribute it again through the web and have feedback from us as to "have things changed?"
In Lynda's own words: "I recently came across an article that Jane Werniuk and I prepared in 1993. We stated that women were seriously under-represented in management in the mineral exploration industry. The paper was scheduled for publication in a Canadian journal but we received a rejection letter from the editor that included the statement "...the point of view expressed here would still be viewed as controversial amongst senior personnel industry. If they were surveyed, industry would without doubt talk about their experience or their fear that junior women are not going to available for lengthy bush assignments which are common for junior males." [my underlining]. It is now 13 years later and we have the option to distribute our paper via the Internet to a broad audience. The question is: Have attitudes changed or is the "fear" expressed by the editor still prevalent? Are opportunities for women in management better now than in 1993? We would like to hear your opinion and your stories. You can send them to Jane Werniuk or I,
